TAE KWON DO ETIQUETTE
Bowing and It’s Purpose
We bow to show respect. A bow can be used to say “hello”, “goodbye”, “thank you”, and “you’re welcome”. Bowing is also a way of showing courtesy and acceptance and respect.
When Do We Bow?
>> Bow to the Flag when entering or leaving the school
>> Bow to the Flag when entering or leaving the training floor
>> Bow to Grandmaster, Masters, Instructors and Staff
>> Bow to Senior Belts at the beginning and end of class
>> Bow to partner before and after each interaction
>> Bow when receiving or giving things to one another
Kihap: The Energy Yell
The Kihap is a very important part of Tae Kwon Do training. It is a yell that comes from deep
down in the stomach.
Why Do We Kihap?
>> To show confidence!
>> To increase power!
>> To heighten mental focus and concentration!
>> To motivate yourself and others by sharing your intensity and spirit!
>> It helps to reduce tension!
Respect
Tae Kwon Do is about having respect for yourself and for others. Tae Kwon Do students are kind, humble, sincere, and always show respect both in and out of the dojang.
When Do We Show Respect?
>> We bow to the Masters, Instructors, Flag, and to each other to show respect!
>> We answer to our elders and seniors with “Sir or Ma’am” to show respect!
>> We use two hands when we receive and give things to one another to show respect!
>> We always ask permission to speak during class to show respect!
>> We are quiet in class and also when we wait in the lobby to show respect!
>> We listen and follow directions to what our Masters teaches to show respect!
Dojang = School
The dojang is where we train in the art of Tae Kwon Do and as such it must be respected.
>> Bow when entering or leaving the dojang
>> Remove shoes and hats while in the dojang
>> There is no food or drink within the dojang
>> Do not chew gum while in the dojang
>> Do no swear, or use offensive language in the dojang
>> Do not argue or lose self-control while in the dojang
>> It is every students responsibility to help maintain the cleanliness of the dojang
Uniform
The Tae Kwon Do Uniform is practical but symbolic of purity and readiness to be taught.
>> All student must wear uniform to class
>> Uniform must be clean and crisp (no wrinkles, stains etc)
>> No jewelry is to be worn during class
>> Long hair must be tied back
>> Finger/toe nails must be trimmed
>> If you fix your uniform or belt, please turn around away from the flag
10 Rules of Dream U.S. Tae Kwon Do
1. Students who enter or exit the school will bow to the Flags. Students should bow to Masters, Instructors and Black Belts when they see them.
2. Students must line up according to belt rank. If student is late for class he/she will line up in the
back for the rest of the class.
3. Students will not leave the class during training without the instructor’s permission.
4. In the school there will be no profanity or unnecessary talking.
5. Tae Kwon Do should be used ONLY as a means to protect yourself, your family and the weak.
6. Never teach Tae Kwon do to anyone without permission.
7. Students will remember to make studying a priority.
8. Show respect and love between Junior and Senior belts in and out of the dojang.
9. No jewelry, watches, or chewing gum will be allowed in class.
10. No “horseplay” and running around is allowed in the dojang or outside the dojang.
7 HOME RULES FOR CHILDREN
1. Children shall greet their parents with “Hi Mom! Hi Dad!” when they enter the home and tell their parents “Good-bye” when they leave.
2. Children will always be respectful of their Parents, Teachers and Elders.
3. Children will be kind to their Brothers and Sisters.
>> Children will not use any Tae Kwon Do moves on their family members of friends.
4. Children will keep the household neat and clean.
5. Children will keep their hair, body and teeth clean daily.
6. Children will not interrupt Adult conversations.
7. Children shall fix the recipe for straight “A’s” daily!
>> When you come home from school, open the refrigerator & have a glass of milk or juice.
>> Open your book to review what you’ve studied today.
>> Do your homework.
